Why Face Masking is Important

Sep 30, 2022

There's nothing like a face mask to step up your skincare routine. The right mask is not just an indulgent treatment, it can also address key skin problems and conditions, from dryness and dehydration to large pores and acne. Read on to learn how often a face mask is used and choose the right one for your unique complexion.

What is the benefits of Masking

Like a serum or a moisturizer, a face mask is a skincare vehicle. It delivers highly concentrated active ingredients, vitamins, and nutrients to the skin to improve its overall health. The difference: face masks are occlusive and they tend to create a physical barrier that locks in beneficial ingredients thereby allowing them to absorb more efficiently.

Face masks are designed to be used often to give an instant boost to your skin. Depending on what your skin needs, there is a mask that can make one (or a combination) of the following:

  • Decongest clogged pores
  • Enhance elasticity
  • Hydrate and moisturize dry skin
  • Refine large pores
  • Minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve skin texture
  • Absorb excess oil and dirt
  • Improve the look of breakouts
  • Brighten dark spots

Types of Face Masks.

There are lots of face mask out there and listed below are few types of face masking and their skin type;

Cream Mask

Skin Type: Normal to Dry Skin

Think of the texture of a rich moisturizer-this is the best way to describe the feel of a cream mask. These face masks do wonders to restore moisture and nutrients to the skin, helping it to remain plump and hydrated. Eminence Organics International Educator Brian Goodwin lets us in on a skincare secret: "The insider tip is that most of our cream-based masks can be used as a leave-on treatment." Cream-based masks like our Bamboo Age Corrective Mask are great choices for refilling and smoothing dry, dehydrated, or aging skin overnight.

Gel Mask

Skin Type: Dry and Sensitive Skin

Gel masks, on the other hand, have a jam or jelly consistency. With their light texture, they are an excellent choice for normal to oily skin types. Many gel masks contain astringent ingredients, such as raspberries and blackberries, which minimize oil and tighten pores. Others are formulated with soothing and moisturizing ingredients, such as stonecrops and honey, to replenish dry and dehydrated skin.

Whatever you choose, you can amplify your results with this skincare tip from Brian: Apply your favorite gel-based mask (our choice is Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Mask) before taking a shower to make it an active in-shower treatment.

Clay Mask

Skin Type: Normal to Oily Skin

It's no secret that clay is an acne-prone skin miracle worker. With its absorbent, exfoliating, and astringent properties, clay addresses acne's root causes and treats on-going symptoms such as excess oil and inflammation. Pro tip: Did you know that a clay mask can be doubled as a spot treatment? It's nice and creamy in texture, and you need a little bit, just hit those little areas and let it dry."

SHEET MASKS

Skin Type: Most Skin Types

Although sheet masks work with all skin types based on the formulas they contain, they are particularly good for resistant skin types when paired with serums. "As we do in the treatment rooms, you're going to want to apply hyaluronic serums under it so that the occlusive nature of the mask can push the serum deep into the skin.

Exfoliating

Skin Type: Most skin types. However, if you have sensitive skin, try an enzyme mask.

Exfoliating masks are formulated to remove dead skin cells and enhance your skin's natural turnover process. This face mask may take the form of a peel that employs alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids to dissolve dead skin cells and clear them from the skin's surface. It may also use finely ground particles like the maize flour in our Rosehip & Maize Exfoliating Masque to gently buff and polish your complexion.

Warming

Warm masks contain active spices such as paprika and cinnamon that make the skin feel warm. These masks work instantly: they cause a tingling sensation, and for some masks, the skin may turn bright red. The immediate effects last 20-60 minutes before a healthy, pink glow are revealed. Just as increased energy is a benefit of exercise, invigorating your complexion is a great workout for your skin.

Note that these masks are not for everyone: if you have sensitive skin, it's best to choose a cream or gel-based mask that won't exacerbate your symptoms.
